Discussion :

Pyrrhobryum is sometimes merged with Rhizogonium, however, Manuel (1980) demonstrated the two should be separated on the basis of morphological and cytological evidence. Pyrrhobryum has spirally arranged leaves with double‑toothed margins, a multistratose border of cells that are similar to the median leaf cells, and n = 7, 6, 12. Rhizogonium has distichous leaves with single-toothed margins, mostly unistratose borders in which some cells are elongate, and n = 5. Manuel (1980) divided Pyrrhobryum into two sections: sect. Pyrrhobryum with basal perichaetia, basal rhizoids, and n = 6, 12; sect. Bifariella with lateral perichaetia, rhizoids borne along the stems, and n = 7. Koponen et al. (1986) discussed the genus in detail.

Medium to robust-sized plants in dark green or yellowish green tufts. Stems erect, simple or forked, moderately to densely reddish‑brown tomentose along stems or at the stem bases. Leaves spirally arranged, linear to lanceolate; margins multistratose, doubly toothed; costae single, subpercurrent to excurrent, dorsally toothed, with two stereid bands; upper cells small, quadrate, rounded‑hexagonal to rectangular, thick‑walled, smooth. Dioicous, autoicous, or synoicous. Perichaetia bud‑like, lateral or basal. Setae elongate. Capsules exserted, erect to horizontal and curved, cylindrical, with short, distinct necks; opercula short- or long-rostrate; annuli present; exostome of 16 narrowly triangular teeth, cross‑striolate or papillose below, papillose above, endostome basal membrane well-developed, segments broad, narrowly perforate, cilia 2–3.
