Plants stiff, green or slightly reddish brown, densely radiculose below, in dense tufts. Stems erect or curved, simple or multi-branched. Leaves narrowly lanceolate to linear-lanceolate; margins thick, single- or double-toothed; costae strong, in cross section with dorsal and ventral stereid bands, usually dentate at back; leaf cells rounded or rounded-hexagonal, mostly uniformly thick-walled, smooth. Dioicous or rarely autoicous. Setae elongate; capsules brownish, elongate-ovoid, curved at back or cylindrical, with short neck, sometimes with longitudinal striae; opercula conic at base, shortly to long-rostrate; annuli well developed; peristome double; exostome teeth fused at base, lanceolate above, yellow to yellowish brown, with median zigzag line, trabeculate; endostome segments hyaline or yellowish, papillose; basal membrane ca. 1/2 the height of the segments, linear-lanceolate, perforate; cilia short, nodulose. Calyptrae cucullate. Spores small, smooth, roughened or papillose.
