The generic description of Splachnobryum is the same as that of the family.

Nine species are accepted in the genus by Arts (2001). Two species are currently recognized in China.
 
1. Leaves ovate to somewhat oblong-ovate; costa ending just above the midleaf.......................... 1. S. aquaticum
1. Leaves lingulate to oblong-elliptic; costa ending slightly below leaf apex................................... 2. S. obtusum
