general taxon notes:
The genus Bryochenea with two species has been treated in various ways since it was published by C. Gao and G.-C. Zhang (1982). O’Brien (1993) synonymized the type species, B. ciliata C. Gao & G.-C. Zhang with Thuidium vestitissimum Besch., but left the second species, B. sachalinensis (Lindb.) C. Gao & G.-C. Zhang, untreated. Later, O’Brien and Horton (2000) reduced Bryochenea to a synonym of a newly published genus Echinophyllum T. J. O’Brien to accommodate B. sachalinensis. In the recent flora, P.-C. Wu et al. (2002) made no mention of Echinophyllum sachalinense (Lindb.) T. J. O’Brien, instead recognizing Helodium sachalinense (Lindb.) Broth. Bryochenea was treated as a synonym of Bryonoguchia Z. Iwats. & Inoue by synonymizing Bryochenea ciliata with Bryonoguchia molkenboeri (Sande Lac.) Z. Iwats. & Inoue (P.-C. Wu & Y. Jia 2000). Touw (2001a) agreed with O’Brien (1993) in considering Bryochenea ciliata the same as Thuidium vestitissima, but he resurrected the generic status of Bryochenea with the new combination Bryochenea vestitissima (Besch.) Touw.
