When Loeske (1907) established the genus Sanionia, he included four species. Later, Sanionia was considered to be monotypic by Nyholm (1965) and Crum and Anderson (1981). Hedenäs (1989b) recognized three additional species of Sanionia from northwestern Europe. There is only one species of the genus found in China.
