Discussion :

Breutelia karsteniana has long, linear, porose leaf cells, sharply serrate leaf margins, weakly developed alar cells, and distinctly papillose rhizoids. It is one of the largest-leaved species of Breutelia in Central America, only B. reclinata (leaves to 9 mm long) is bigger. Breutelia reclinata differs from it in having more strongly clasping, reddish orange leaf bases and scarcely differentiated alar cells. Breutelia rhythidioides can be confused with B. karsteniana, but that species has shorter (to 5 mm long), rugose leaves, straight-walled leaf cells, and 4–9 rows differentiated alar cells extending up the basal leaf margins. The type of B. maegdefraui differs from typical B. karsteniana in only having a mixture of straight-walled and weakly porose leaf cells, while the type of B. falcatula differs only in having somewhat curved-falcate rather than straight leaves.
