Breutelia nigrescens is distinguished by the large plant stature to 10 cm, falcate stem leaves, appresss (sheathing), plicate leaf base with 1-3 pairs of sulcate pockets, sharply serrate leaf limb margins, excurrent costa, and 4-8 rows of large, hyaline, thin-walled marginsal leaf base cells extending to near the leaf shoulder. The type of this species was collected by Herzog on his first trip to Bolivia in 1908 from San Benito (Department of Cochabamba). Breutelia boliviensis Herzog is a synonym.
