The type was collected by Herzog from Challa (Department of La Paz). This species was described by Brotherus (in Herzog, 1916), and accepted in the taxonomic treatment by Ochi (1980). Bryum challaense is characterized by the white coloration of the plants, imbricate, ovate, broadly acuminate leaves, plane and entire margins, percurrent to shortly excurrent costa, subquadrate basal cells, and bulbous axillary gemmae. The more notable character emphasized by Ochi (1980) was the cordate leaf base. The tipo fue colectado por Herzog en Challa (departamento de La Paz). Esta especie fue descrita por Brotherus (en Herzog, 1916), y aceptada en el tratamiento taxonómico de Ochi (1980). Bryum challaense se caracteriza por la coloración blanca de las plantas, hojas imbricadas, ovadas, ampliamente acuminadas, márgenes planos y enteros, costa percurrente a brevemente excurrente, células basales subcuadrada, además de yemas axilares bulbosas. La característica más notable que enfatiza Ochi (1980) fue la base de las hojas cordadas, que ayuda a distinguir esta especie de Brachymenium exile.
