Plants medium-sized to rather large, 30–50 mm high, yellowish green to reddish brown, in loose tufts. Stems erect, usually branched. Leaves contorted-curved when dry, squarrose when moist, broadly ovate-lanceolate to triangular-lanceolate; margins entire, revolute; costa stout, percurrent, reddish brown; upper leaf cells rounded hexagonal, thick-walled, with 1 to several lower papillae; basal cells short-rectangular, mostly smooth.
