Notes :
Ecology: High open montane to páramo and humid puna; associated with marshy or boggy sites, on humic soils. Elevation: 2860-4500 m (Colombia: 2860-3800 m, Ecuador: 3400-4180 m, Peru: 4500 m). Distribution: Widespread in temperate Northern and Southern Hemisphere; in the Neotropics known from Jamaica, Colombia to Peru.
 
Ecología: Subpáramo a páramo y puna húmeda; asociada con lugares cenagosos o pantanosos. Elevación: 2860-4500 m (Colombia: 2860--3800 m, Ecuador: 3400--4180 m, Perú: 4500 m). Distribución: Ampliamente distribuida en la región templada de los Hemisferios Norte y Sur; en el Neotrópico conocida de Jamaica, Colombia a Perú. Los esporofitos no han sido observados en el Neotrópico

Plants medium sized to somewhat robust, forming loose to dense tufts, glossy green to yellow or golden-brown. Stems erect or ascending, few to several branched, branches short, often cuspidate at tips; in cross-section hyalodermis present, central strand weak; paraphyllia absent; pseudoparaphyllia foliose. Leaves subjulaceous, erect, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, ca. 2-2.5 mm long, to 2 mm wide, deeply concave, apex obtuse to acute-rounded, base auriculate; margins plane below, incurved above, entire; costae absent or occasional short and double (rarely to 5-forked); apical cells short, 10-25 µm long, 4-5 µm wide; median cells linear, 50-90 µm long, 2-4 µm wide; alar region ± excavate, cells oval to oblong, 50-100 µm long, 25-50 µm wide, outer rows hyaline, thin-walled, inner rows golden-yellow; insertion cells elongate, strongly porose, golden to golden-red or -brown. Dioicous. [Perichaetia lateral; leaves differentiated, oblong-lanceolate, acuminate. Setae elongate, wiry, smooth. Capsules inclined to horizontal, urn obloid-ovoid, when dry subcylindrical, curved and asymmetric; opercula conic-apiculate; peristome double, exostome teeth 16, cross-striate below, tips papillose, bordered and trabeculate, endostome basal membrane high, segments 16, keeled and often perforate, cilia 2-4, nodulose. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth and naked. Spores lightly papillose.]

Tallos erectos o ascendentes, poco a muy ramificados, ramas cortas, generalmente cuspidadas en los extremos; hialodermis presente en sección transversal, cordón central débil; párafilos ausentes; pseudoparáfilos foliosos. Hojas subjuláceas, erectas, anchamente ovadas a ovado-oblongas, aprox. 2-2.5 mm de largo hasta 2 mm de ancho, profundamente cóncava, ápice obtuso a agudo-redondeado, base auriculada; márgenes planos abajo, incurvos arriba, enteros; costa ausente u ocasionalmente corta y doble (raramente hasta 5-furcada); células apicales cortas, 10-25 µm de largo, 4-5 µm de ancho; células mediales lineares, 50-90 µm de largo, 2-4 µm de ancho; región alar ± excavada, células ovales a oblongas, 50-100 µm de largo, 25-50 µm de ancho, hileras externas hialinas, de paredes delgadas, hileras internas dorado-amarillas; células de la inserción alargadas, fuertemente porosas, doradas a dorado-rojas o -pardas. Dioicas. [Periquecios laterales; hojas diferenciadas, oblongo-lanceoladas, acuminadas. Setas alargadas, alambrosas, lisas. Cápsulas inclinadas a horizontales, urna oblada-ovoide, cuando seca subcilíndrica, curvada y asimétrica; opérculo cónico-apiculado; peristoma doble, dientes del exostoma 16, estriados transversalmente abajo, extremos papilosos, bordeados y trabeculados, membrana basal del endostoma alta, segmentos 16, plegados y generalmente perforados, cilios 2-4, nodulosos.
