Project data     (Last Modified On 10/18/2013)
Distribution: Plants in loose, yellow-green tufts up to 2.5 cm high, reddish-tomentose below, equally foliate. Leaves appressed when dry, erect-spreading when moist, 4-6 mm long, narrowed to a long acumen from an ovate-lanceolate base, entire except at the extreme apex; costa 1/2 the leaf base, not ribbed at back, excurrent, in section showing large ventral leucocysts (occupying half the height of the section) and dorsal groups of 2-4 small stereids; alar cells conspicuously differentiated, hyaline or red-brown, mostly hyaline at the margins and brownish within, generally protruding into the costal area; basal cells rectangular, hyaline, thin-walled, 35-55 x 15-20 µm, those at the margins slightly narrower (but not forming a distinct border); upper cells subquadrate to short-rectangular, 15-18 x 10-15 µm, smaller at the margins, vanishing near the leaf middle. Sporophytes unknown.
Discussion: This moss is distinguished by subquadrate upper cells extending only to the midleaf and conspicuously differentiated alar cells encroaching on the base of the costa. Campylopus heterostachys likewise has alar cells encroaching on the costa, but the upper cells are smaller, and the long subulae densely toothed. Campylopus sharpii has a smooth subula, but the leaf base is bordered.
