Distribution: Very common on exposed rocks,boulders, cliffs, and dry soil on banks of roads and trails in oak-pine forests; Baja California, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Durango, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Mexico, Michoac‡n, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz. - Arizona to northern South America; Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico; southeastern United States; Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Discussion: This common species, generally known (incorrectly) in the American literature as C. introflexus, has hyaline, serrate awns, ribs at the back of the costa, and poorly differentiated alar cells.

Plants in rigid, green to brownish-green tufts 0.5-5 cm high, sparsely reddish-tomentose, equally foliate (only perichaetial leaves forming comose tufts). Leaves 5-7 mm long, ovate-lanceolate, gradually acuminate, subtubulose above, entire except for a hyaline, serrate awn of various lengths; costa 1/2-2/3 the leaf base, ribbed at back because of lamellae 2-4 cells high, excurrent, in section showing a layer of dorsal stereids in groups of 3-5 cells; alar cells not or somewhat differentiated; basal cells hyaline, thin-walled, long-rectangular, narrower at the margins, extending 1/3 up the leaf at the margins; upper cells shortly oval to oblong-rhombic, 9-16 x 7-8 µm. Setae 3-5 mm long; capsules 1.5 mm long, ovoid, brownish. Spores 13 µm, pale brown, roughened. Calyptrae fringed.
