Habitat: on rocks in wet places or bogs in high, cold mountains; alt. 2000–3500 m.
Distribution: China, Russia, Europe, and North and South America.

Cinclidium macounii Kindb., Rev. Bryol. 23: 21. 1896.
 
Plants reddish to dark brown, in loose tufts. Stems erect, simple, to 10 cm high, rarely branched, with dense rhizoids at base. Leaves distant, broadly elliptical or nearly rounded-ovate, ca. 5.5 mm × 3.5 mm, abruptly acute, apiculate at apex; margins entire, bordered by 2–5 rows of linear, thick-walled cells, with reddish brown color; leaf base abruptly narrowed, broadly and shortly decurrent; costae thick, reddish brown, percurrent or shortly excurrent; leaf cells nearly isodiametric or hexagonal to rhombic, obliquely arranged, ca. (20–)30 µm × 50(–60) µm. Autoicous. Setae solitary, ca. 3–6 cm long, yellowish brown; capsules ellipsoidal to shortly pyriform, pendulous; neck short. Spores 30–60 µm in diameter, minutely papillose.
