Plants medium-sized to large, usually 5–10 cm high. Stems erect, often branched, in gregarious or scattered tufts. Stem leaves crowded above, erect or patent when dry, mostly appressed, erect-spreading when moist, basal leaves often scale-like, 3.5–7.5 mm long, upper leaves ca. 1.5 mm long, narrowly lanceolate from a sheathing base; ventral lamellae in 24–40 rows, 5–8 cells high; apical cells inflated-ovate, with many gross papillae; margins sharply long toothed; costa rather broad, often with spines on back near apex; median cells rounded ovate to rounded quadrate or hexagonal, usually 10–15 µm wide, sometimes oblate-rectangular; cells at sheathing base rectangular, 30–90 µm × 6–12 µm. Dioicous. Perigonia discoid; perigonial leaves broad and short. Perichaetial leaves similar to the stem leaves, sheathing at base. Setae slender, rigid, 0.8–3(–5) cm long; capsules cylindrical, 3.0–5.8 mm × 1.5–2.0 mm, mostly erect, without apophyses; stomata at base of urns; epiphragm fleshy; peristome teeth 32–40, sometimes more than 40; annuli differentiated; opercula long beaked. Calyptrae cucullate, densely ciliate, with brownish hairs. Spores 18–24 µm in diameter, finely papillose.
