Plants small to large. Stems erect, simple or branched, in scattered or gregarious tufts. Leaves densely crowded at stem tips, slightly crisped when dry, erect-spreading, sometimes fugacious when moist, basal leaves mostly scale-like, densely appressed; lanceolate or narrowly lingulate from a strongly sheathing base; lamellae on the ventral side of costa, sharply spinulose on the back above; margins entire or serrate; costa narrow; median cells nearly rounded to rounded quadrate, sometimes nearly oblate. Dioicous. Perigonia in rosettes; perigonial leaves short. Perichaetial leaves similar to the stem leaves, usually with broadly sheathing base. Setae slender; capsules erect or inclined, with 4–6 obtuse keels, cylindrical, apophyses usually distinct, with stomata at base of urns, epiphragm fleshy; peristome teeth mostly 64, rarely 32; annuli differentiated, deciduous; opercula beaked. Calyptrae cucullate, densely ciliate, yellowish hairy. Spores spherical or rounded ovoid, minutely papillose.
