Plants medium-sized to large, mostly 5–10(–15) cm long. Stems usually simple, erect. Leaves densely crowded or appressed when dry, erect or erect-spreading when moist; lower leaves scale-like; upper leaves 6–10 mm long, narrowly lanceolate, with a broad sheathing base; ventral lamellae in 35–65 rows, 4–6 cells high; apical cells of lamellae arching, lumen rather large, similar to the lower ones, thin-walled; leaf margins sharply toothed; costa broad, ending in the apex, extending into a filiform acumen, often spinose on back; median leaf cells rounded ovate to rounded quadrate, 8.5–10 µm wide, sometimes oblate; cells at sheathing base narrowly rectangular, 65–85 µm × 7–10 µm. Dioicous. Setae slender, 2–5 cm long; capsules with 4 obtuse keels, exserted, apophyses small, indistinct; epiphragm fleshy; opercula with a short beak; annuli differentiated; peristome teeth 64, ca. 20–25 µm long. Calyptrae cucullate, densely covered with golden cilia or hairs. Spores spherical, (10–)13–16 µm in diameter, verrucose.
