Plants medium-sized, usually 3–5 cm high. Stems erect, simple or branched, in scattered or gregarious tufts. Leaves densely crowded and clasping on upper stems, erect when dry, erect-spreading when moist; basal leaves scale-like; upper leaves 5–10 mm long, lanceolate, slightly sheathing at base; ventral lamellae in 20–50 rows, 4–7 cells high, apical cells of the lamellae pyriform, yellowish, with large lumen; costa narrow, spinose on back above; leaf margins serrate; median leaf cells rounded ovate or nearly quadrate, thick-walled. Dioicous. Perigonia in rosettes, perigonial leaves short. Perichaetial leaves similar to the stem leaves, usually sheathing at base. Setae slender, 3–4 cm long; capsules erect or slightly inclined, 4.0–5.5 mm long, 4–6 obtusely keeled, apophyses distinct; exothecial cells thick-walled; stomata at base of urns; opercula beaked, deciduous; annuli differentiated; peristome teeth usually 64; membrane thin. Calyptrae cucullate, densely covered by golden hairs. Spores spherical or rounded ovoid, 11–13 µm in diameter, verrucose.
