Neckera chilensis is characterized by the combination of erect-spreading, undulate leaves, acute apices, 6-10 alar cells on the non-fold side of leaf, and exserted capsules. Not infrequently mixed with N. scabridens; when sterile the two species may be difficult to distinguish, however alar cells of N. chilensis number 6-10, whereas 3-5 are found in N. scabridens. Neckera cyathocarpa Müll. Hal., N. jamesonii Taylor, N. novae-granadae Müll. Hal., N. osculatina De Not. are synonyms.
