Sematophyllum lithophilum is characterized by the robust plants, deeply concave, suborbicular to obovate leaves to 2 mm, obtuse or broadly and bluntly acute apex, weakly crenulate upper leaf margin, apical cells shorter than upper median cells, distinctly large and inflated rectangular-oblong alar cells., and 2-3 rows of supra-alar cells. Sematophyllum cochleatum (Broth.) Broth. and possibly S. loxense (Hook.) Mitt., are synonyms.
 
Sematophyllum lithophilum se caracteriza por las plantas robustas, hojas suborbiculares a obovadas hasta 2 mm, profundamente cóncavas, ápices obtusos o anchamente y obtusamente agudos, margen de la hoja débilmente crenulado en la porción superior, células apicales más cortas que las células mediales superiores, células alares rectangular-oblongas, conspicuamente grandes e infladas, y 2-3 filas de células supra-alares. Sematophyllum cochleatum (Broth.) Broth. y posiblemente S. loxense (Hook.) Mitt., son sinónimos.
