The plants of Platydictya subtilis are generally smaller than those of P. jungermannioides, and it differs from the latter by its entire leaf margins and its better-developed alar cells.

Plants minute, somewhat rigid, dull, dark green or yellowish green, in loosely caespitose mats. Stems prostrate, less than 1.0 cm long, irregularly branched; stem rounded in cross section; cortical cells small, in 1–2 layers, thick-walled; central strand absent; pseudoparaphyllia small, filamentous or foliose. Leaves erect-spreading, ovate-lanceolate, ca. 0.3 mm × 0.15 mm, gradually acuminate, obtuse at apex; costae single, short or indistinct; margins entire; median leaf cells narrowly rhombic to shortly rhomboidal, 8–16 mm × 7–8 mm, thick-walled; basal cells shortly rectangular; alar cells numerous, subquadrate, arranged along leaf base. Autoicous. Setae ca. 10 mm long; capsules suberect, oblong-ovoid, more or less symmetric; peristome double; exostome broadly lanceolate, cross-striate at base; endostome segments linear-lanceolate, papillose; basal membrane high; cilia 1–2. Spores 12–18 µm in diameter, minutely papillose.
