Plants minute, very delicate, soft or somewhat rigid, light to dark green, in loose mats. Stems slender, prostrate, irregularly branched; central strand absent; rhizoids irregularly forked, smooth; pseudoparaphyllia filamentous or foliose. Stem and branch leaves similar, lanceolate or linear-lanceolate; margins entire or serrulate; costae single, or indistinct; median leaf cells rhomboidal or elongate-hexagonal; alar cells numerous, quadrate, often oblate, or shortly rectangular. Dioicous or autoicous. Inner perichaetial leaves straight, lanceolate, with a long apex; costae forked. Setae slender, curved when dry, yellowish or purple; capsules usually erect, symmetric or somewhat arcuate, rarely slightly inclined, elongate-ovoid or shortly cylindrical, constricted below mouth when dry; annuli differentiated; cilia usually single, sometimes absent, rarely 2–3, nodulose. Spores small, smooth to papillose.
