Description Subshrubs or shrubs, rarely trees. Leaves membranaceous or subcoriaceous, decussate, petiolate or sessile, usually glandular, ovate to elliptic to linear, usually glabrous with 2 sessile marginal glands near the base; petioles sometimes biglan- dular; stipules axillary, persistent, linear to triangular, inserted to the base of the petiole. Inflorescences terminal, racemiform or sometimes paniculate or corym- biform, laxly few flowered to densely many flowered, bracteate and bibracteolate, pubescent to glabrous; pedicels slender, erect, articulated above the bracteoles. Flowers zygomorphic to actinomorphic; calyx deeply 5-parted, eglandular or 5-glandular; petals glabrous, clawed, usually unequal, yellow; stamens distinct to connate, usually glabrous, the anthers usually basifixed, glabrous, lacking ap- pendages, the connective uniform; ovary sessile on the disc, subglobose, usually angular, usually 3-carpellate, 3-locular, the styles usually 3, terminal, persistent in fruit; receptacle glabrous. Capsule usually angular-subglobose, glabrous, the lobes weakly ribbed, tardily medially and loculicidally dehiscent; seed 1 per car- pel, pendulous; embryo folded, cotyledons incumbent, subequal.
Habit Subshrubs or shrubs, rarely trees.
Note A genus of 10 species, Galphimia ranges from Texas to Argentina occurring in drier habitats. One species, G. gracilis is widely cultivated for ornament.
