General/Distribution: A genus with 70 species, distributed in tropical regions. In Pakistan it is represented by 2 cultivated species.

Evergreen trees with milky juice. Leaves alternate or spirally arranged, coriaceous. Flowers solitary, or fascicled, axillary. Calyx 6-lobed, lobes in 2 series. Corolla 6-lobed, star-shaped, glabrous, each lobe 3-segmented. Stamens as many as corolla lobes, opposite, often alternating with another row of stamens or staminodes. Ovary superior. Fruit ovoid or globose berry. Seeds large with narrow ventral scar.
