Geocardia was published as an avowed replacement name for Geophila D. Don, which was an illegitimate name because it was a later homonym. However, another replacement name, Carinta, had been previously published for Geophila, so Geocardia was not needed and was an illegitimate superfluous name. Later, the name Geophila D. Don was formally conserved, so the name Geocardia is now rejected because it is based on the same type (At. 14.4).
