This evaluation is based on recent publications and a draft on a Revised list of Potamogetonaceae of Madagascar by Z. Kaplan (Institute of Botany Academy of Sciences, Průhonice, Czech Republic), version 26.8. 2011, specialist of the genus Potamogeton. Potamogeton x vaginans is currently considered as an hybrid (Wiegleb & Kaplan 1998) but the Malagasy plants differs from the African specimens; P. vaginans will be therefore treated as a separate endemic malagasy species in the forthcoming worldwide monograph of the family.
