Vigna Savi
Eighty-five to 104 species, widespread
in tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World; several species widely
cultivated and occasionally escaped.
The generic circumscription of Vigna remains
somewhat controversial. In the strict sense, there are probably 85–90 species
in Vigna (Schrire, 2005). Phylogenetic study of
selected members of the relatively large tribe Phaseoleae
(Bronn) DC. using
molecular data has suggested that a group of about 17 neotropical
species traditionally included in Vigna is more closely related to some other New World genera
than to the remainder of Vigna
(Delgado-Salinas et al., 1993).
