Annual or perennial, erect, branched, scabrid–villous, herbs. Leaves simple, opposite, upper occasionally alternate, petiolate, ovate, deltate to lanceolate. Capitula terminal, radiate or ± disciform, small, in terminal, leafy dichotomous cymes or panicles. Involucre ovoid–campunalate or hemispheric. Phyllaries 2–seriate, outer green. Receptacle flat to minutely convex, paleae oblong, scarious, conduplicate. Ray florets female, fertile, 2–seriate corolla yellow, rarely white, ligule 2–3 lobed. Disc florets, bisexual, fertile tubular–campanulate, 5–lobed; anther tails obtuse, dentate. Cypselas dimorphic, pubescent or glabrous; ray cypselas triquetrous to dorsally compressed, 2– or 3–angled, disc cypselas laterally compressed, obpyramidal to obovoid, truncate at the apex. Pappus of 2–3, unequal, awns on a rostrum, sometimes few scales.
