Alternate name: Labiatae. The following genera were traditionally assigned to Verbenaceae: Adelosa, Callicarpa, Clerodendrum, Holmskioldia, Karomia, Premna, Tectona, Vitex and Volkameria.
Recent molecular work on the Tribe Ocimeae, Subtribe Plectranthinae has resulted in extensive changes to generic concepts, as a result the genus Coleus has been re-instated for certain species until recently included in Plectranthus (e.g. in Fl. Madagasc.), and Pycnostachys is now also included in Coleus (Paton et al. 2019.). In addition, 3 endemic mono-specific genera: Dauphinea, Madlabium and Perrierastrum have been placed in synonymy under Capitanopsis. The latter, now increased to 5 spp. is the only genus of Lamiaceae now regarded as endemic to Madagascar (Paton et al., 2018)
