Type:

Holotype: Pakistan: Karakorum, N of Gilgit, Khunjerab, 4600 m, 8.7.1989, A. Bosshard, F. Klotzli & R. Schaffner 130/131.22 (TI); iso. (ZT–n.v.).

Distribution:

Endemic to Gilgit, 3800-4600 m.

Comment/Acknowledgements:

Apparently endemic although to be expected on the Chinese side of the border also. Allied by Yamazaki to P. uliginosa Bunge (Pamir to Tien Shan) and P. sudetica Willd. (particularly subsp. pacifica Hultén of Kamchatka, Alaska and eastern Siberia); differing from P. uliginosa by the deltoid, slightly cuspidate-dentate calyx lobes and glabrous filaments, from P. sudetica subsp. pacifica by the ovate leaf segments.

Cauline leaves absent, or 1–2 alternate towards top of stem, similar to radical but smaller. Inflorescence subcapitate, dense, up to 7-flowered; flower opening from base. Bracts lanceolate, obtuse to subacute, 7–10 mm long, irregularly serrate, ± densely white-pilose. Calyx tubular, c. 15 x c. 5 mm; tube c. 5.5 mm long, slightly cleft anteriorly, rather densely white-pilose, hairs thin, long and crisped; teeth 5, the posterior one very small (c. 1.2 mm long), lanceolate, the others ovate, c. 2 mm long, cuspidate-dentate, all crispate-pilose. Corolla c. 20 mm long, pink(?), galea darker than tube and lower lip; tube c. 13 mm long, straight, glabrous; lower lip suberect, dilated, c. 6 × 9 mm, middle lobe orbicular, smaller than laterals, c. 2 × 2 mm, with shallow median notch; lateral lobes broadly orbicular, c. 9 × 5 mm, entire, glabrous on margins; galea perhaps crimson when fresh, c. 8 mm long,  lower part c. 4 mm long, anther-bearing part c. 4 × 4 mm, short bilobed beak c. 1 mm long, the lobes deltoid and each with a deflexed prong. All filaments glabrous; anthers elliptic, subacute at base. Capsule and seeds not known.
