Kit Tan (1980) recorded the species for Spain based on the name Thymelaea virgata var. densiflora, which was itself based on two specimens supposedly from the southern part of the country (Cabrera s.n., s. loc., in Hb. Agardh and Hb. Liebmann, not seen). Neither Thymelaea virgata nor Lange's variety name were mentioned in Flora Iberica (Nieto Feliner, 1997).
