General notes: Endlicher cited one name in synonymy as "Dais octandra Lam. Dict. II. 254. - Madagascaria." Dais octandra L. (1767) does indeed appear in Lamarck's treatment of the species in Encycl. 2: 254 (1786), but without any mention of Madagascar. Dais octandra, now recognized as Phaleria octandra, is distributed in the Malesian/Australia region and the species has never been reported in Madagascar. So it is most likely that the citation of "Dais octandra Lam." was a typographical error for "Dais madagascariensis Lam.", a name that was first legitimately published on the same page of Encycl. 2: 254 (1786) by Lamarck. Endlicher's Arthrosolen name is regarded here as a combination based on Dais madagascariensis Lam. The name was interpreted as a replacement name for Dais octandra and consequently treated as an excluded name in Rogers (2009: 364).
