General notes:
Synonymy tentatively follows Wright, Fl. Cap. 5(2): 30 (1915). One sheet with several affixed specimens all attributed to Ludwig [Com. a Mus. Reg. Stuttgart. 1846] in Herb. Meisner (NY) was annotated as the variety Beta breviflora by Meisner with a reference to the correct page of the protologue in Linnaea. No reference, direct or indirect, was obviously made to this sheet in the protologue. It does not appear to represent type material of the variety. The sheet was later annotated as Struthiola macowanii C.H. Wright by Bo Peterson in 1954. Further study of these names and their types is needed.
