The species now included in Razafimandimbisonia were previously included in Alberta, but Kainulainen et al. (2009) separated these so that Alberta is now restricted to southeastern Africa while Razafimandimbisonia is restricted to Madagascar. Razafimandimbisonia is now considered most closely related to Nematostylis.
The species of Razafimandimbisonia are rather commonly encountered and very showy due to the bright red or red-orange petaloid calyx lobes and corollas (e.g., Puff et al. 1984: fig. 1, P. 295; Kainulainen et al., 2009: fig. 1, p. 759). The name commemorates Sylvain Georges Razafimandimbison, a very noted specialist in systematics and taxonomy of the Rubiaceae and in particular the Rubiaceae of Madagascar.
Razafimandimbisonia minor is perhaps the most commonly encountered species, and this name is rather often applied incorrectly to plants that belong to the other species of this genus. The MO specimens are on loan so the species information here is mainly based on the revision published by Puff et al. (1984).
