Phialiphora is a genus of low herbs that can be recognized by their rather succulent, weak habit with sessile basal leaves, shortly fimbriate stipules that are fused to the bases of the adjacent leaves, terminal capitate inflorescences enclosed by a fused pair of somewhat enlarged leaves, homostylous 4-merous flowers with rather well developed calyx lobes and pink to lilac corollas, and small loculicidal capsules with numerous seeds borne on an axile placenta. This genus is endemic to northwestern Madagascar, where it is known from white sand substrates. Neither of these species was known to science under any name until the study of Groeninckx et al. (2010). Phialiphora capitulata is unusual among other features for its fruits, with an air chamber at the top of each locule.
