Notes:
This species is not well documented, and may be known from only two specimens but the P herbarium has not been consulted for this evaluation (CMT, Aug 2013). This species is characterized by its robust leaves and stipules, its terminal lax inflorescence with the flowers sessile and borne individually along short dichasial axes (which can be interpreted as pedicels in some cases), and its short calyx. It is similar to some other species of Psychotria, and in fact the fruits were not known to Bremekamp when he described this species in Cremocarpon. However the immature fruits show the enlarging disk that is characteristic of Cremocarpon. This species has been confused with Psychotria lantzii in herbarium identifications, but Psychotria papanga can be separated by its larger leaves that are rounded (and then shortly acuminate) at the tips and larger inflorescences with verticillate secondary axes.
