Knowledge of this species in Madagascar is very limited. A collection of the species was made by Paul René Montagnac and a sheet is deposited at the Paris herbarium (Montagnac 73). In their revision of Aristolochia for Africa and M'car, de Groot et al. 2006* casted doubt about the authenticity of the label and the origin of the specimen. However this does not seem justified, especially in the light of an observation reported on iNaturalist in April 2023 (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/153804962). Furthermore, Montagnac worked on locust control in the Toliara region and established a botanical garden in Toliara - he was evidently interested in plants that could be used for pest control. It therefore seems quite likely that he (or his colleagues) introduced plants of this species to Madagascar to study their anti-anthelminthic activity and trypanocidal effects. The species may have become naturalised, and has persisted locally near Toliara. It is possible that the species is native to M'car but this seems unlikely given that no other material of the species is known from elsewhere in Madagascar, and it is not known from adjacent areas of mainland Africa.
