Notes:
This species is commonly collected, and has been documented on a variety of substrates including white sand in littoral forest, coastal swamps, and on laterite. It is generally characterized by its medium-sized rather thin-textured leaves, bilobed stipules, rather well developed calyx lobes, and medium-sized white to orange corollas. It is similar to the uncommon species Danais andribensis; Puff & Buchner (1994) separate the latter species by its deeply bilobed stipules with the lobes prolonged and its longer corollas. Danais cernua is also rather similar in general aspect, frequency, and many characters to Danais fragrans; Puff & Buchner separated Danais fragrans by its thicker-textured leaves, entire stipules, and smaller corollas. They also noted that Danais distinctinervia is similar to Danais cernua except these can be separated by their seeds.
