Notes:
This species is characterized by its small, deciduous, bidentate stipules, its obovate, medium-sized leaves that are obtuse to rounded then abruptly shortly acuminate at the apex; its lax, multiflowered, corymbiform inflorescences with well developed peduncles and well developed, verticillate secondary axes; its small subsessile flowers, and its small ellipsoid or subglobose fruits. Bremekamp saw a number of specimens from more than five localities, but this species does not seem to be documented by more recent collections. Psychotria alaotrensis is similar to Psychotria homolleae and Psychotria coursii, which have most or all of the flowers pedicellate.
