Notes:
This species was characterized in the protologue by its hispid pubescence; relatively large ovate stipules that are prolonged at the apex; rather large leaves with numerous secondary veins; axillary and terminal inflorescences with the flowers in one or a few capitulate groups; well developed calyx lobes; and relatively long, blue-black corollas. Puff & Buchner (1994) considered the identity and generic position of Danais coerulea, whether a recognizable species and whether it belongs to Danais vs. Payera, questionable mainly because they did not see fruits and seeds of this species. They did conclude that the characters described for this species all agree with Danais while some conflict with the characters of Payera, and it is provisionally here included in Danais. Within this genus, the characters given in the protologue distinguish this species from all the other documented Danais species. It appears from the description to be similar to Danais capituliformis, but these species differ in calyx and corolla size.
This species is only known from the type, which was collected in the Manongarivo massif but the habitat and elevation were not noted.
