Plants medium-sized to robust, grayish green or yellowish green, sometimes blackish, glossy. Primary stems creeping; secondary stems pendulous, loosely or irregularly branched; branches short, obtuse at the apex. Stem and branch leaves similar, sometimes dimorphic, often complanate, obliquely patent, ovate to oblong or cordate below, gradually to rather abruptly narrowed to a long, straight or incurved to twisted apex, often undulate above; margins serrulate above, nearly entire below; costae single, thin, often ending ca. 2/3 the leaf length; leaf cells oval, rhomboidal to linear, evenly thick-walled, sometimes distinctly porose; median cells oval or elliptic, strongly thick-walled, usually unipapillose; apical and basal cells usually smooth; alar cells more or less differentiated, shorter, quadrate; axillary hairs mostly consisting of 4 cells, hyaline. Dioicous. Perichaetia on lateral branches; inner perichaetial leaves often sheathing at the base, short to long acuminate at the apex. Setae elongate, much longer than capsules, somewhat scabrose above; capsules erect or slightly inclined, oblong-ovoid to cylindrical, apophyses distinct; opercula conic, often obliquely rostrate; peristome double; exostome teeth lanceolate, papillose; endostome segments linear, as long as the teeth, perforate; basal membrane low; cilia absent. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth. Spores spherical, finely papillose.
