Hygroamblystegium is presently considered to be monospecific genus with a broad distribution, and found in semi-aquatic to aquatic habitats. This genus is typically associated with streams and waterfalls, characterized by the procumbent plants, ovate to ovate-lanceolate leaves with a moderately to stoutly strong, distally often flexuous costa, ending in the acumen, generally subpercurrent to percurrent, rather short, firm walled lamina cells, and alar region weakly differentiated. The genus was previously placed in the Amblystegium.
