Habitat: on soil or thin soil over rocks in wet areas; alt. 500–1450 m.
Distribution: China and tropical regions or high elevations of warm temperate regions of both hemispheres.

Plants small to medium-sized, to 15 mm high, yellowish green to reddish, in tufts. Stems short, julaceous. Lower leaves small, sparse; upper leaves larger, dense, elongate-ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 0.8–1.5 mm long, cucullate above, narrowly obtuse or apiculate at apex; margins plane, entire, indistinctly bordered by 1–2 rows of linear-rhomboidal cells; costae ending below the apex or percurrent; upper and median leaf cells lax, rhombic or elongate-hexagonal, 85–150 µm × 20–25 µm, thin-walled; basal cells rectangular. Dioicous. Setae 10–15 mm long; capsules inclined to horizontal, shrunk when dry, pyriform, reddish brown; neck shorter than urn, narrowed at base; opercula conic, shortly apiculate; exostome teeth somewhat papillose, hyaline above; endostome segments linear, shorter than the teeth, perforate; basal membrane low; cilia absent. Spores 18–22 µm in diameter.
