Bryol. Eur. 3: 41. 1838. Syrrhopodon reinwardtii Hornsch., Nova Acta Phys.-Med. Acad. Caes. Leop.-Carol. Nat. Cur. 14 (2): 700. 1829. Type: Indonesia (Java).
 
Plants medium-sized, lightly green or yellowish green above, dark brown below, in loose mats. Stems to 2 cm high, irregularly branched, with dense rhizoids at the base; central strand absent. Leaves spirally and loosely arranged, irregularly twisted or curved when dry, somewhat undulate, spreading, or sometimes squarrosely recurved when moist, narrowly oblong-lanceolate to broadly lanceolate, 2.0–2.5 mm long, keeled, acute, ending with uni- to multi-celled tips, decurrent at the base; margins serrate above, entire, often recurved below; costae subpercurrent, smooth; upper leaf cells irregularly rounded to oblong-hexagonal, 6–12 µm wide, moderately thick-walled, with 3–6 rounded papillae per cell; lower cells rectangular, smooth, gradually becoming shorter, oblong-quadrate toward margin. Autoicous or dioicous. Setae 8–13 mm long; capsules fusiform, oblong-ovoid or narrowly cylindrical, 1.5–2.5 mm long, sometimes slightly curved, strongly 8-ribbed, constricted toward seta with a well-developed neck; opercula long-rostrate; exothecial cells not clearly differentiated in longitudinal bands; stomata mainly on the neck of capsules; peristome fragile or absent. Calyptrae cucullate, not plicate, naked. Spores 18–25 µm in diameter, coarsely papillose.
