Distribution:
On soil and tree trunks at medium altitudes; Chiapas, Hidalgo, Michoac‡n, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Veracruz. - Mexico; Colombia and Bolivia;.Arizona and Wyoming; southeastern United States. The complete distribution is not known because of confusion with C. flexuosus.

Differing from C. flexuosus in having less developed basal auricles, hyaline, thin-walled basal cells, large ventral leucocysts (occupying 1/2 the height of the section), as well as a virtual absence of tomentum.
