We agree with Koopman & Baum (2008) that Humbertianthus cardiostegius is a synonym of M. laurina. Australian spp included in this genus by some earlier authors are not regarded as close to the Malagasy spp (Craven and Pfeil, 2004), and these are now included in Hibiscus. This genus is now placed in a larger genus Hibiscus as molecular data suggest (Koopman & Baum, 2008)
