Previous treatments accept 3 subspp of the widespread G. americanus for Madagascar. However we believe these are quite distinct from material of the genus from other parts of the world and merit recognition as 2 or 3 endemic species. Valid species names for these taxa are not available, but an article on this topic is in preparation.
