AIZOACEAE (Fig-Marigold Family)
About 60 genera,
about 2,500 species, nearly worldwide, but most diverse in the Old World,
particularly South Africa and Australia.
The genera Glinus
and Mollugo were treated in the family Aizoaceae by Steyermark (1963)
and many earlier authors, but they are now considered by nearly all botanists
to belong to a separate family, Molluginaceae (Bogle, 1970; Cronquist, 1981,
1991). Also, the monotypic genus Geocarpon was treated in the Aizoaceae
by some earlier authors, but it is now generally accepted as belonging in the
Caryophyllaceae (Palmer and Steyermark, 1950; Steyermark, 1963).
