General notes:
Webb (1968) described the habit of the species as a deciduous dwarf shrub with decumbent, often tortuous branches. One Italian subspecies is tentatively accepted for the species following Urbani (1992) and Halda (2001). Urbani (1992) noted that the typical subspecies has also been reported for the Balkan Peninsula up to the Hungarian coast and was also reported for Corsica.
