This species is characterized by its elliptic leaves with a developed submarginal vein, short cymose axillary inflorescences, well developed and lobed calyx limb, and well developed corolla. The circumscription here follows Davis in sched.; there may be more than one species among the specimens currently identified as Psychotria brachyblastus, but the material available is not adequate to resolve this.
