Notes
:
This species is characterized by its somewhat slender habit with rather small leaves; its short, bilobed, hirtellous stipules; its pedunculate, congested-cymose to subcapitate inflorescences; and its sessile small flowers with a short yellow corolla. Bremekamp classified this species in his Mapouria, which was diagnosed by pyrenes that are flat adaxially and ruminate endosperm, and in a group characterized by red fruits; however he did not actually see the fruits. The species is not well known or characterized, and its circumscription here is provisional. Bremekamp recognized two varieties, with glabrous plants in the typical variety and var. pubescens distinguished by having pilosulous or hirtellous petioles, abaxial leaf surfaces, and peduncles. This species is very poorly documented so the oresence or amount of variation in pubescence within populations cannot be assessed. Psychotria tsarataranensis seems to be quite similar to Psychotria leilae, which is also poorly known; these were separated by Bremekamp based on petiole and leaf size, however with more collections now available this seems to vary more than he saw in plants that match the characters of Psychotria leilae and two groups cannot be separated by these features. Bremekamp also noted that Psychotria tsarataranensis is similar to Psychotria humbertii, Psychotria vigueiri, and Psychotria ruhsahmiana, which are also not well known.
